Student Essay - Park Young Gyu, Year 8, Taylor’s International School - The Visitor

Park Young Gyu, Year 8, Taylor’s International School

The Visitor

A man would visit every day in a grey uniform with shiny black buttons and medals on his chest. He would march into our home and salute my father at exactly the same time every day and my father would be waiting for him. I was bored all the time so I watched them like a hawk and I found out that their timing was perfect, to the second. In school, I could only say my father was a man in uniform because I had no idea what his job was. I was ashamed because everybody else’s fathers were businessmen or shopkeepers.

One day, while I was waiting for the man in uniform with a watch in my hand, I noticed that all his actions were exactly one second late. I compared the time on my watch with that on the grandfather’s clock downstairs to make sure it wasn’t late. The next day, the man came two seconds late and all his actions were also two seconds delayed. This trend continued until the tenth day when we moved out. I know that most people would not notice these things and would not think they were related but I found it suspicious. I was told that we were moving somewhere more peaceful and quiet so my father could work more efficiently. But I was never told where we were moving to. I tried to stay awake on the train and to guess where we were heading to but I fell into deep slumber. I woke up in a soft bed with a window right next to it allowing sunlight to glare into my face. I went downstairs to find my mother cooking and my father in his room working. I was never allowed inside but I could hear voices and the sound of typing on a typewriter.

A new visitor comes now, at the exact same time the last one did, performing the same actions. My father worked longer now and it seemed like he was getting more frustrated every day. I asked him about it one day but he avoided the question and instead told me I was very smart and observant. I realised he was hiding something from me but I knew he would never tell me anything. I could see a column of smoke in the distance and it never went away. Sometimes it was white and sometimes it was black. Sometimes I even saw planes in the sky like massive birds but my father made me stay inside. I wished I had someone to play with. A dog or a cat would be perfect but my mother hated their fur. One day, I tried to talk to the visitor but my father scolded me and the visitor just ignored me. The visitor didn’t visit the next day and I was worried he got into trouble because I tried to talk to him so I questioned my father about it but he said I had nothing to do with it.

My mother and I were going to leave for an even more “peaceful’ place but I reckoned it was going to be even more boring. Father would stay. I tried to convince him to come with us but nothing could change his mind. We got on a train very different from the last one. It was much smaller and less comfortable but nonetheless I fell asleep. I woke up to loud and scary noises that I found out were sounds of planes. We went into an airport which was pretty much empty and arrived at an airfield which was also empty except for one plane. We got on the plane with a few other people who looked tired and anxious. I dozed off again. Father used to tease me saying that I was a pig because I always fell asleep.

I felt a thud and heard tire squeals which woke me up. We got out of the plane and were greeted by hot wind even though it was still April. I looked around and saw many tense and anxious people. I noticed a car heading towards us. It stopped in front of my mother and me. We got in and left for a new life of secrecy. My mother wouldn’t let me mention my father’s name again.

Josephine Lee Ji Yeon, Year 8, Taylor’s International School

My Best Friend

My best friend is Semi. She came to Taylor’s when I was in Year 5. I didn’t know her then. I first met her when I was in Year 6 and when I became friends with her, I was very happy because I liked her a lot and whenever either of us was sad, we could talk to each other in Korean. There are reasons why I like her a lot.

Firstly, she is really kind. She shares her things with me. She shares her stationery, such as pens, pencils, erasers and so on, with me. She also shares the food that she buys with me. She shares a lot with me so I also share my things with her. Moreover, she buys food for me all the time, especially when there is a charity sale. She would buy cupcakes, biscuits, crackers and many more for me.

Secondly, she is extremely funny. The thing that is funny about her is that she laughs a lot. Anything I say to her will make her laugh. I don’t know why but I find the way she laughs very funny. A lot of times, when I see her laughing, I ask her why and when she explains it to me, I will laugh together with her. Additionally, she tells me lots and lots of jokes. There were a lot of jokes which were funny and made me happy. I still remember all the funny jokes that she has told me.

Thirdly, she is so pretty. She wears really nice clothes. She makes me want to dress up like her. I always feel jealous when she has clothes that I like. Even her accessories are so awesome that she shines like a diamond. Furthermore, she has long hair. I wish my hair could grow longer too because it is currently short. Her long hair looks really pretty on her and I like it regardless of whether it is straight or curly.

I am so happy that I have the perfect best friend. I love my best friend Semi and I hope that we will be best friends forever.

Student Essay - Lost In The Jungle – by Kim Jun Seok, Year 8, Sayfol International School

Lost In The Jungle – by Kim Jun Seok, Year 8, Sayfol International School

One sunny day, I woke up early in the morning and got ready for my first jungle trek with my friends, John and Susan. I was so excited about it. I quickly took a shower and checked my bags in case I’d forgotten something. Everything was perfect. I took a short breakfast with my father. After that, I grabbed my bag and left my house to meet my friends. At that time, I didn’t know that there would be huge trouble ahead.

The jungle which we planned to go to was quite far from our city. Its name was Sukihara Jungle. We needed to drive for one hour but it wasn’t a boring drive as we were all excited about our first jungle trek. We hired a guide to avoid danger. His name was Jake and he said he had trekked in the Sukihara Jungle lots of times. At the edge of the jungle, Jake briefed us about the jungle. Then we started trekking. There were lots of trees and plants which I hadn’t seen before. The smell and sound of the jungle was so beautiful and after admiring a very unusual plant for a long while, I noticed that I was standing at an unusual place. Then I realised that I was lost!

The day started to become darker and scarier. I was very confused and didn’t know what to do. I called out to my friends but there was no reply. I was unable to find my way out of the jungle. I was starting to get tired and hungry. I walked for a few more minutes and then realised that I’d gone too deep into the jungle. Insects were flying everywhere. A snake frightened me and made me run. I was terrified and craved to see the end of this nightmare.

After a few hours of walking, I was so tired and wanted to give up. The ground was so muddy and made me more tired as I trudged along. I wished I had a time machine to go back to the time before I got lost. I was so miserable. I’d never felt this terrible in my life. I gave up all hope and sat on the ground. When I was about to fall asleep, I heard a human voice. I distrusted my ears but when there was another voice, I became convinced that it was real. I shouted and they heard me.

They were rescuers who had coming looking for me because John and Susan had reported my loss. They took me back to my friends and I was so happy to see them. My friends and I were sent back to our homes. It was the worst experience I’d ever had. When I arrived home, I just fell onto the bed. I promised myself I would never go to the jungle again.

Student Essay - Helen Keller – by Tony Kim June Cheol, Year 8, Sayfol International School

Helen Keller – by Tony Kim June Cheol, Year 8, Sayfol International School

Helen Keller was a lady who couldn’t see or hear. But she succeeded in doing many amazing things in her life. There are several specific reasons why I admire her.

Firstly, she learned lots of things despite her handicap. She learned only by touching. Without the ability to see, hear or speak, it is very difficult for anyone to learn. However, she even managed to go to college. It is not easy to anyone to go to college; we must study hard to get in. It is admirable that she managed to get in although she couldn’t see or hear. For her, any activity was hard but her handicap did not stop her.

Secondly, she was a very determined person. She never gave up no matter difficult things were. Many people looked down on her and discriminated against her because of her handicap but she did not care. Because of her handicap, life was hard but she did not give up. She even went to work with normal people. Even on the day her mother died, she still went to work. Her determination is admirable.

Thirdly, she was very pitiful. She got teased a lot by others. Some people scorned her because she was handicapped. They wanted to use her for various reasons. She did not have many friends because it was difficult for her to communicate with others due to her handicap. The only true friend she had was her teacher, Ann Sullivan. So, at times, she was very lonely, living in a world without sight or sound.

In conclusion, I admire Helen Keller because although she could not see or hear, she was highly successful. There are many things we can learn from her.
