What qualities do you look for in friends? – by Shin Soo Jin, Year 11, Sayfol International School

What kinds of friends are you looking for? Smart? Attractive? Humorous? Famous? Or popular? Well, the qualities that we look for in friends are different for everyone. I had a friend who was looking for a popular and pretty friend. She found the girl and started to hang out with her. However, the girl didn’t study and played all the time. By hanging out with her, my friend noticed that her grades were falling and teachers started to reprimand her. From this, she learnt that the qualities of friends are important in every way. For me, I look for friends who are loyal, compatible with me and humorous.

Firstly, I look for a friend who is fiercely loyal. People who have strong loyalty are trustworthy and it is good to make them your best friend. These friends are reliable because they keep secrets very well. They will listen to you carefully and try to help you. Moreover, they will never abandon you or betray you. These friends are friends who will be on your side even if everyone abandons you. They will advise you and help you to take the right path. These friends are very hard to find so if you find them, you should consider yourself very lucky. Hence, we all need a friend who is very loyal to us and not betray us.

Secondly, it is very important to find a friend who is compatible with you. Even if you have many friends, if you are not compatible with them, you will never form a deep friendship with them. If you become friends with a person who has a totally different personality from yours, you will never become close friends. This is because it is easy to get into a fight with a person who has a different character from you. Your ways of thinking are so different from each other that you cannot understand each other. So find a friend who has similar traits to yours so that you will be able to get along with each other. When you find these kinds of friends, they will easily become your best friends. Thus, I want a friend who is compatible with me.

Lastly, it is good to have a friend who is humorous. People who are funny are good at making people happy. They can easily change the mood between people just by telling a joke. Just by their gestures or words, they make people laugh and feel more comfortable. If you have a humorous friend, he or she will cheer you up and make you laugh when you are having a hard time. He or she will make you strong and give you hope. Moreover, if you have a funny friend, you can make new friends through him or her. People with a sense of humour have lots of friends and you will meet lots of people through this friend. By hanging out with him or her, you can strengthen your relationship with other people. Therefore, I think it is good to have a friend with a sense of humour.

In conclusion, I look for a friend who is faithful, compatible and funny. It is very hard to find a person who can fulfil all the qualities you are looking for but when you find him or her, you must appreciate them. You also need to fulfil the qualities that he or she is looking for in a friend. Friends who fulfil each other’s expectations will last a lifetime.
