Class 14: Debate

Class 14: Debate

A debate is a formal 'argument' between two people or teams. If you are asked to write a debate, you will have to take stand and write persuasively to convince your readers of your standpoint. Remember to use formal language. The structure is as below:

In the first paragraph, greet your listeners, state the topic/motion of the debate and immediately tell your listeners which side of the debate you are on.

In the second paragraph, state your arguments/reasons for taking your standpoint. Give details and examples that your listeners can relate to. Your job is to sway them to share your opinion on the matter.

The third paragraph is your conclusion. Summarise your points quickly, remind your listeners again why they should be on your side, and thank them for listening.

Assignment 14 :

1. Write a debate arguing the against the topic, "Children should not be allowed to watch television."

2. Write a debate supporting the topic, "Students should not be allowed to bring cell phones to school."
