Class 13: Reported Speech

If you are asked to report what someone else said, use indirect or reported speech. Don't forget to write in past tense and change your pronouns accordingly.

In one of the past year exam questions, students were asked to report an interview. There were two interview questions and students were requested to write in two paragraphs. In this case, write one question and answer in each paragraph. For example:

Paragraph One:

I asked her what the joys of old age were. She reflected thoughtfully and then replied that . . . . . . . . . . .

Paragraph Two:

I went on to ask her if there were any disadvantages of being old. She chuckled and then revealed that . . . . . . .


Note: Try not to use the word 'said' but instead try to use a more 'active' word. Look up a thesaurus if you can't come up with anything.


Assignment 13

1. Write one paragraph of reported speech based on a discussion you had with your friend about where to go on your next vacation.

2. Report a conversation you had with one of your parents. You were asking for more pocket money.

3. Report an argument you had with your teacher who believed that you had stolen your classmate's wallet.
